Col. John Pine Decatur (1786-1832)

of Newark, N.J., Sutler to Fort Gibson and previously Navy Agent at Portsmouth, N.H.

He was born in Philadelphia. From 1811 to 1814, he was a partner in the firm of Bullus, Decatur & Rucker, owners of the Bellona Powder Mills at Belleville, New Jersey. He was a sportsman, active in the War of 1812, and kept a large residence in Newark, New Jersey. He died of Typhoid at Fort Gibson, Arkansas, where he was the fort's sutler (supplier).

John Pine Decatur

Captain John P. Decatur, interred in Grave 2101, was the Sutler (a person who follows an army and sells provisions, etc., to the soldiers) at Fort Gibson and is the brother of Commodore Stephen Decatur, naval hero of the War of 1812.
