    Notes:

    Susannah Spencer was a daughter of Justice of the Peace William Spenser and he was the one who performed the marriage ceremony between his daughter Susanna Spencer and Isaac Tripp. The following information was taken form the Valentine Research Studio of Washington D.C., written by Caroline Valentine and published in 1932. Page 121: An unassuming will of a Rhode Island Justice of the Peace William Spencer,-- a will which was not even very long, was one of the most wide-reaching, for it helped to settle the descent of virtually all citizens of the state of Pennsylvania, who were born Tripps. Also it helped greatley to settle the question of Isaac Tripp's three marriages, one of which William spencer himself performed. Pennsylvania Tripps were nearly all from this first Isaac. They went out over the entire United States, and at this late date, they want to know there ancestry. Written after 1735, when Samuel was born, and apparently before the 1736 date on which Ruth was born, and nameing Sarah, Job and Samuel as his own grandchildren, it has forever settled some questions which could never have been settled without its facts.     Bock: Considered by Valentine (page 90) to be child of Susannah's with no issue for Sarah. However Sarah's birth of 1731 (Wilbur J. harding, The hardings in America...(Keystone Iowa 1925) 35) with a known second marriage date would place her as issue of this wife. Valentine also says Sarah is mentioned in will of William Spencer, but name is actually given as "--nah". No further record.

    Notes:

    Job Tripp is the second son of Isaac Tripp, son of Job Tripp, son of Peleg Tripp, son of John Tripp the Founder. He married Hannah Rice at East Greenwich Rhode Island but lived at Warwick Rhode Island where all of his six children were born. There is some evidence that he, and at least part of his family, moved to Wyoming valley with his father Isaac.

    Job Tripp settled in the new region, in the western portion of Abington. He had a little money and was determined to make the most of it. He purchased a grindstone and brought it into Abington which for six years was the only one there. He fenced in saplings allowing no one to grind upon it unless they paid him a stipulated sum and turned the stone themselves. He fenced much of the woods by falling trees for a deep pen where the deer were slain, and dried venison and buckskin were sold. He was to be the Midas of the community!

    The following note, regarding Isaac Tripp, appears in the History of the Abington Baptist Association, "This Isaac Tripp was in early life a resident Capouse Meadows in the Lackawanna Valley. In the eighteenth year of his age and soon after the Wyoming massacre, he was taken captive by the Indians and with others marched to Canada. On the way he experienced the most excruciating sufferings from the gnawing's of hunger and cruel treatment of the savages, who bound his hands behind him and compelled him to run the gauntlet. At Niagara he met his cousin, Miss Frances Slocum, who was also a captive from the Wyoming Valley. They planned their escape, but their intentions being discovered by their captors, they were separated and never more to meet again, and young Tripp was sold to the English and compelled to enter their service, in which he reluctantly continued until the close of the Revolutionary War. He now returned to his early home and resumed the peaceful pursuits of the farm. He moved to Scott, Luzurne County and finally settled in the Elkwoods, in Susquehanna County. His wife died in Clifford, May 20th, 1816 aged 67 years. He followed her to the grave April 15th, 1820 aged 60 years. The remains of both now repose in the burying ground near Clifford Corners."

    Another Version Young Isaac Tripp, and his grandfather, Isaac Tripp the Elder were "taken prisoner by Indians in 1778 with two young men by the name of Keys and Hocksey. Grandpa Isaac was painted and dismissed, but the others were hurried into the forest (now Abington) above Liggetts's Gap, on the warriors' path to Oquago. Resting one night, they rose the next morning traveled about two miles , when they stopped at a little stream of water. Two Indians took Keys and Hocksey some distance from the path and were absent for half an hour, the older Indians looking anxiously the way they had gone. Suddenly the death-whoop was heard and the young Indians returned, brandishing bloody tomahawks and exhibiting the scalps of thibiting the scalps of their victims. Young Isaac Tripp's hat was taken from his head and his scalp examined twice. The savages speaking earnestly, then at length, they told him to fear nothing, he would not be hurt; and carried him off prisoner."

    Notes:

    John Tripp was the second son of Job Tripp, son of Isaac Tripp, son of Job Tripp, son of Peleg Tripp, son of John Tripp the Founder. His older brother Isaac was the Grandson of Isaac Tripp, who was captured by the Indians, then taunted by them, while they killed two of his friends and scalped them. He was then sold to the British in 1778. This happened during the Revolutionary war.

    John Tripp was born in Middletown, Pennsylvania. He married Martha Phillips, daughter of Deacon John Phillips. John Tripp was a farmer there in Pennsylvania and died fairly young, before January 20, 1820. The reason we mention this date, is that John Phillips died on that date, and left David R. Tripp, John's son, a farm, "because his father had died previously." John Phillips, of course, was David Ralph Tripps grandfather.

    John Tripp was, an extensive land holder and it is assumed that he divided this land amongst his children. He and Martha had seven children, all born in Pennsylvania. Bock: Land Records information can be found in Dean. (Randall; Peleg Tripp 4,9; Arnold 4:18; Dean 14,22-4).

    Frances Slocum was captured by Three Delaware Indians on November 11, 1778 from her home in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. She was not heard from again by her family until September 20,1837.
    Frances had been discovered in early January 1835 by a Col. George Ewing, a trader, but a letter to the post office at Lancaster, Pennsylvania was ignored by post mistress Mary Dickson!! It lay for more than 2 years before a John W. Forney became aware of the letter and published a story about it in The Intelligencer. prominent newspaper at that time. This was the very newspaper that was formerly owned by Mary Dickson, at the time the letter was written!

    Ruth Tripp Slocum never gave up on finding her little red haired girl alive. On her deathbed, she asked her sons to never give up finding Frances, or her fate. They never did! At the time she was embraced as the long lost sister, however, only her brother Joseph, her brother Isaac, and her sister Mary were still living. All of 58 years, 10 months, and 9 days had passed!!

    Abducted by Indians in Pennsylvania Frances Slocum, or Maconaquah, (1773-1847) was an Indian captive who was taken from her family home in Pennsylvania in 1778 by the Delaware Tribe. She was raised by an elderly Miami Indian couple in what is now Ohio

    Frances Slocum Capture by Indians:
    Captured as a child by the Delaware Indians in 1778 from her Pennsylvania home, she grew up with the Indians, married a Miami chief, and lived in Indiana till her death, 1847.

    Died:
    On March 9, 1847, Frances Slocum died of pneumonia at Deaf Man's village along the Mississinewa River in Indiana. She was 74 years old. Slocum was initially buried near her cabin at Deaf Man’s village, beside her second husband, She-pan-can-ah (Deaf Man)
