    Notes:

Alice G. Tripp is my 1st Grandaunt. We do not know what happened to her. Her father died in 1872, leaving Mary Evaline Williamson Tripp, her mother, a widow with three small children. She traveled with them to Oskaloosa, Iowa and moved in with h her Mothers sister, her Aunt Mahala Snelson Reynolds. Eventually, two of the children, my Grandfather John William Tripp and his sister Mary Evaline Tripp was left there to be raised by Joseph P. Reynolds and their Great Grandaunt Mahala Snelson Reynolds. We assume that Mary Evaline Williamson Tripp remarried and left the area. Grandfather "Will" Tripp one time, referred to her as a "big raw boned irish woman". He therefore must have seen her as he was growing up. She may have taken Alice G. Tripp with her, or she may have died, or she may have been raised by someone else. Herman William Tripp--Trying to find someone to Remember----

    Notes:

Mary Evaline Tripp married and lived in the Mitchellville area for approximately 10 years. Her husband's name was William Snelson. The story is that being a butcher and out of work, ended up in Chicago with a job, probably in a packing plant. When he he asked his wife to come and live with him in Chicago, Mary Evaline Tripp Snelson, put the three children on a train to him, then promptly left the area. We have heard nothing of her since. We assumed that she remarried and perhaps had other children--our cousins. Because of the fear of disgrace etc. the family has never talked about it, if they knew. Grandpa Tripp never mention her name again as far as can be determined. Her husband's mother, Sarah Hibbs Snelson lived in the Lake City area. One census showed that Mary Evaline's daughter Rosa Snelson was living with her or at least was present during the census in 1900.

    Notes:

John William Tripp is my Grandfather.

John William Tripp is the son of David Tripp, son of David R. Tripp, son of John Tripp, son of Job Tripp, son of Isaac Tripp, son of Job Tripp, son of Peleg Tripp, son of John Tripp the Founder. John William Tripp, like his father, also barely made it. His father David Tripp died when he was only six months old. He never got to know his father, but stories handed down by his children indicate that he did know his mother, even though she left him to be raised by his Great Aunt Mahala Snelson Reynolds. Grandpa was not too happy with that arrangement, but we need to give his mother Mary Evaline Williamson Tripp the benefit of the doubt. She was married to David when she was seventeen and was a widow at Twenty-one years of ag with three children, all under 5 years of age!

Even though John William Tripp did not talk about his background, it is obvious that he knew about his father and family. His third son George's middle name is David after his father, and his second son Ernest's middle name is Ralph after his uncle Ralph that died tragically in the fatal month of May 1855, when the whole Tripp family was decimated. Part of the reason for his non discussion of his past, was his intense devotion to his own family, 5 boys and one girl!! Of special interest to me, is the fact that he named his first-born son, Joseph after Joseph P. Reynolds, his foster father. Grandpa tells the story about getting a riding horse for his 16th birthday, when he was expecting a team and wagon, but I think that Mr. Reynolds did a pretty good job raising my Grandfather, John William Tripp! John William Tripp grew up near Rose Hill, Mahaska County, Iowa, where he had many close friends as his autograph book clearly shows. His foster mother had given him the book as a present and he promptly made good use of it by getting numerous messages from his friends and classmates. One of the messages was written by his future wife Alice Myrttle Sanford! They evidently were long time friends and got serious enough to get married, after they both worked for the Hibbs family. They were married in Polk County and had all of their children near Mitchellville Iowa. Grandpa was an Elder at the local Church of Christ, where my Dad and other members of the family belonged. In 1915 the family moved to Boone County, Iowa. I am sure that the girls were all glad to see five boys move into the community, because they were all eligible a and they all did marry in that community. Dad (Joseph Raymond Tripp) married my Mom Florence Marjorie Shedd who grew up in the neighborhood. Uncle Ernie (Ernest Ralph Tripp) married Mable Ball (my Aunt Mable Ernie) one week after Dad and Mom got married; they "stood up for each other" and settled down within a couple of miles of each other, near Napier, Boone County, Iowa. Uncle George (George David Tripp) married Mabel Kitchen (my Aunt Mabel George) and promptly moved on a farm half way between his two older brothers! Uncle Gerald (Gerald Sanford Tripp) married Velda Stuart (my Aunt Velda) moved on a farm a little farther away from the other three. Uncle Harris (Harris J Tripp) married Zelma Slaughter (my Aunt Zelma) and moved to the Truro area, which is south of Des Moines. Uncle Harris welded many years for Solar Aircraft in Des Moines. Aunt Mary (Mary Alice Tripp) married Millerd Lee (my uncle Millerd) fifty yeas ago, February 27 1988. They have always farmed in Story County, and are retired in Boone, Boone County, Iowa. All the Tripps have been a close knit family which pleased Grandpa very much. In 1932 John William Tripp (I was named after him) was making hay at his place north of the Lincoln Highway in Story County. He was on the hayrack holding onto the trip rope that he used to "trip" the hay loose, once the fork full of hay entered the big hay barn door. When the hay entered the barn, he pulled on the rope as he had done many, many times before. This time--the rope broke! Grandpa fell backwards, hit the ground--broke his neck! He said "Don't touch me." A few days later, in his own home, in a hospital bed, he visited with me as if nothing had happened. When he tried to drink water from a straw he said "Herman, I hope that you never, ever need to go through something like this!" So far I never have! I am 68, My Grandpa Tripp was 59. He died the next day. I was 9 years old! Herman WILLIAM Tripp--Remembering----

John Woodford Snelson died from a fall from a load of hay in 1946. John William Tripp died from a fall from a load of hay in 1932. They were first cousins!! Herman William Tripp--Remembering----

    Notes:

My Dad always loved the hills, back hollers, and other out of the way places. I never could understand why, until Mrs. Leroy Warren who is 100 years old directed me to the old farm, where Dad spent a lot of his time in his younger days. Now those are hills that are hills! It looked to me that only horses could be used to farm the land. There are plenty of trees, creeks and gullies to make anyone with that calling happy.

Clara and I have visited several old Tripp stomping grounds, and it seems to us that hills and hollers had a particular calling for Tripps. Davies County Indiana was such a place. Most of the land is farmed now, but there are plenty of trees, hills and hollers to call the Trippps home. That is where they are buried; on the hills amongst the trees! That's another story. When I was a little boy I went everywhere with my Dad. As I have said before, he fastened a seat on the horse drawn single row cultivator especially fofor me, and I used it! We talked a lot. I can still hear the cultivator shovels cutting through the soil. I can smell the fresh dirt as it was turned up black, fresh and moist. I can hear the birds whooshing in to catch the earthworms before they could "dig in". I can still hear the harnesses squeaking as Joe and Bell or Florie and Bill bulled into it to pull us along. I can smell the sweat on a hot day as they seemed to enjoy doing their job. The growing corn was beautiful. We cultivated together, we harnessed and unharnessed the horses, we milked the cows, fed the pigs, fed the calves and we sawed wood. My fondest memories are the chilly days we would cut down a tree, trim the branches and saw the trunk into 18 inch long chunks. Dad always said that his Dad, could beat anybody trimming the branches from the tree trunk with his axe, and do it before the dust settled around a newly fallen tree. I thought my Dad did pretty good himself! He wasn't much for bragggging though. I marveled at the way he could cut through the thick branches with chips flying in every direction with every swing of his axe. At eight or nine years of age I could not do so well, but he would say "When you have chopped up as manny trees as I have, and are as old as I am, you will be able to do even better than I, maybe as good as your Grandpa!" I did improve with age, I think. Time passed as it always does, we moved, we farmed, and eventually we graduated to tractor farming. We farmed 240 acres together and one day I had an opportunity to rent 160 acres of land 11 miles away near Spring Lake. I talked to my brother-in-law-Dick Miller about going with me 50-50 and farming it together. He was interested, bubut his landlady would not let him, so I intended to let the opportunity go. Dad was not getting any younger, in fact he was old, I thought then. He said "Go ahead son, take the place, I will help you!" That was one of greatest things that ever happened to me and my Dad. We had the equipment, we had the time, and we worked together farming that place. One day when we were finishing up combining oats at the Spring Lake place, the main chain flopped around and broke into a thousasand pieces. It was 6 o'clock Saturday night. I had two rounds to go to finish this field. It was going to rain. I was fit to be tied, because I always want to finish up Saturday night. There was a big rock there at the corner of the field and my Dad sat down on it, surveyed the situation, surveyed the countryside and said "Well, quite an experience!!" That was my Dad.---- Herman William Tripp--Remembering----

May 30, 1993 It is 8 PM, and I Remember......My Dad and the flag covering his casket. He would have been so proud... Tomorrow, Memorial Day his flag will wave with others who fought in wars for our country. So many things, I do not know. He did not seem to want to talk about it....... I wish I knew!! I know that he sailed to France arriving in Brest, with his outfit. He told me that many died with the flu on the way over and that the average life span at the front linines for machine gun companies, was 32 seconds. Imagine the fear and concern that he and his buddies had on arrival in that war torn country. Luckily the war ended with an Armistice on November 11, 1918, shortly before he arrived at the front. On his return to the United States though, he saw his buddy die of the flu shipboard. He and his buddy with numerous others, trying so hard to return home alive! We never tired of looking at and thinking about the history of his canteen, his cup and utensils; the French coins that he passed on to us. Dad is gone now...and I wish I knew more......

Ernest Ralph Tripp My Dad's Brother My Uncle

My Uncle Ernie was special. He was friendly to all of us nephews and nieces, always ready to talk and to listen. He also had a wooden leg! We cousins never tired of asking him about it and "Would he show it to us and would he take it off". It never occurred to us that he had gone through tremendous suffering over a long period of time, prior to and during his leg amputation. I knew my Uncle Ernie, as an easy-going successful farmer, who had a 1937 Oliver tractor. I could tell that he took very good care of it and was proud of the job that it had done. I am sure, that he took considerable kidding about this tractor, because it was one of a kind in the neighborhood and was "different". I, myself picked Oliver to be my tractor, and Uncle Ernie had a lot to do with that. I believe that Grandpa John William Tripp named Uncle Ernie--Ernest Ralph Tripp after his own Uncle Ralph Tripp that died so tragically during an epidemic in 1855. I am glad that Uncle Ernie lived a long and full life, compared to his namesake! Ernest Ralph Tripp, son of John William Tripp, son of David Tripp, son of David R. George David Tripp My Dad's Brother My Uncle George

George David Tripp, had the privilege of bearing the name of our long lost Great Grandfather David Tripp. David Tripp was missing for over 100 years. Uncle George was a happy type of person that was fun to be around. "Aw, go on, get out of here!" Then that deep laugh, and I remember! My Uncle George, a friend to everyone, was a favorite of my mothers. One year, he pulled the binder with his fordson tractor. Mom rode the binder to dump the bundles, three and four at a time in the shock row. There was a string tied to Uncle George and connected to the binder, within Mom's reach so that Mom could pull on it to get his attention, in case of trouble with the binder. Dad and I would shock oats in rows, eight bundles per shoock, plus the cap, for nine. I could not fan the bundle for the cap though, Dad had to do that. I lived for the day that I would be big enough to do the cap. When Mom and my Uncle George would come around, we would wave, and they would wave back. I felt pretty big--and happy. I remember! HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY THEN! Herman William Tripp--Remembering----

The year was 1958. The month was June. The date was Wednesday the 7th. Uncle George is here at the old home place 3 miles north of Paton. We are sitting on the back steps. Donald is near by. "I remember the good old days, when we used to cut oats together." Uncle George was reminiscing. "I remember the good times our families had together." "I only wish I would have gotten here sooner, so that your Mom would know that I had come." He said. And I said, "She Knows!" Mom left us the next day. Herman William Tripp --Remembering----

Gerald Sanford Tripp's name is interesting. Sanford is the maiden's name of his mother Alice Myrtle Sanford Tripp. Was this name trying to tell us something? Family research indicates that the name Sanford, from Isaac Horatio Sanford, descended down from John Sanford. John Sanford came to this country in the 1630's, same as John Tripp. They both signed the Portsmouth Compact to start the new town! They knew each other! Their descendants married each other! John William Tripp married Alice Myrtle Sanford and had Gerald Sanford Tripp! Astounding! Uncle Gerald was a basketball player! First of all he looked like a basketball player, and second, I heard about his playing ability from my earliest memories. He was an inspiration to me because I was also small, like him. My coach yelled at me, "Tripp, you have got to cover him. I don't care if he is bigger than you. Out smart him, use your speed." And I remembered my Uncle Gerald! If he could do it, I could do it! I made the team although I was smaller than anyone that went out for basketball.

Harris John Tripp My Dad's Brother My Uncle Harris

The Napier store is a real nice place to me. My Uncle Harris drove me here in his model T Ford over rough and rutted roads, just to buy me some pop. I order strawberry. Thats a big boy pop! Uncle Harris rolled out a half dollar. Wow he must be rrich! I don't remember seeing a half dollar before. My pop was a nickel! We talked, and he treated me like a big boy, I appreciated that. The year is 1928 and I am 5 years old! It was cold. It was snowy. The phone rings. There has been an accident! We all rush to the Boone hospital, Dad, Mom, Alice, Norma and I. Donald George Tripp's eyes are swollen shut, not expected to live. Uncle George David Tripp, blood all over, has a bad head cut. Uncle Harris Tripp is unconscious! We are all scared, what is going to happen. Dad stays at the hospital, Mom and us kids stay at Grandpa Shedd's house two doors from the hospital. We don't sleep much that night! The next day, as the picture clears, Donald will live, although, he has some recuperating to do. Uncle George and Aunt Mable will recover. A neighbor Stub Bassett, also in the accident, will be alright. What about Uncle Harris, he is still unconscious! After several days, with his brothers sitting up with him, keeping him in bed, it was decided that he should be taken home, nothing more they can do here. He is taken to Uncle George's house where he was staying before the accident. Uncle Harris's brothers all take turns staying with Uncle Harris. He rolled and flopped around in his bed, he had to be held in to keep him from rolling onto the floor and injuring himself further. It is the eighteenth day since the accident. Uncle Harris has been away for that long. But wait, he has opened his eyes! He slowly regains full consciousness! Welcome back Harris John Tripp! The year is 1934. We will remember this for a long, long time. Herman William Tripp--Remembering----

Mary Alice Tripp Lee My Aunt

Dear Aunt Mary, Elizabeth Ann has kept at me for several years to write down some of the stories that she has heard me tell about our ancestors. I have discovered so much about them, and there are plenty of stories! I am probably more interested than some people, because of the fact that we had no known ancestors beyond my Grandpa Tripp and your Father. I am sending you a printout of each family, starting with John Tripp the Founder and your relationship with each Grandfather. After each Grandfather, I am also making printouts of the notes that I have remembered about each one. These "stories" are resumes of an abundance of information left behind by their lives. This cover letter includes and starts off with the story about Zacheus Lester Tripp, who in my opinion is the greatest hero, among many heroes in our family. He needs to be known and remembered! Herman WILLIAM Tripp--Remembering----

Your story is yet unwritten. I need some help with some written down information from you about what it was like growing up in a house full of men and boys. Your brother, Joseph Raymond Tripp, My Dad, would have been 96 today! (July 6, 1991)

Mary Alice Tripp, daughter of John William Tripp, son of David Tripp, son of David R. Tripp, son of John Tripp, son of Job Tripp, son of Isaac Tripp, son of Job Tripp, son of Peleg Tripp, son of John Tripp the Founder.

When you and I were little, I was so proud to have a sister. Remember how inseparable we were? You were very important to me in high school. You carried messages from the girls to me so that I could have dates! Because of you I had steady girls all of the time. You and Darwin were so good to take us with you on double dates. Those were the days! You and Elizabeth have been after me to write down some of the stories that you have heard me tell of our ancestors. Well, after twenty years of discovery, I am finally able to get some information together for you. I am sending printouts of each family, starting with John the Founder and your relationship with each Grandfather. After each Grandfather, I am also making printouts of notes that I have recorded from memory about each one. These "stories" are resumes of an abundance of information left behind by their lives. This cover letter includes and starts off with the story about Zacheus Lester Tripp, who in my opinion, is the greatest hero, among many heroes in our family. He needs to be known and remembered! July 6, 1991 Herman William Tripp--Remembering----

P.S.Your story is yet to be written. Your father Joseph Raymond Tripp and my Dad would have been 96 today!

. Dear Alice, You got me started and now I can't stop! I always have wanted to record for posterity but I hate writing ( no one can read it ), I hate typing, but I like computing! I don't sleep early at night, but I wake up early in the morning. So--I remember and record a lot of little stories about our past in the time I save by not sleeping! I think it would be very nice if you would also record some of your memories about growing up in the "Good Old Days". All of your nephews and nieces would love that and I am sure that your stories will be passed down to their children and grandchildren--for posterity! With love from your only brother Herman William Tripp--Remembering---- HOW GREEN IS MY VALLEY NOW!

Frances Esther Tripp Conyers My First Cousin

You were not only my First Cousin, you were the first one that I knew as my cousin. I am still jealous of you, because Santa Clause always came to your place, before He came to our place. What kind of pull did you have anyway? I was not jealouus of the fact that you washed dishes at 4 years of age though! I was at least 21 years of age before I washed my first dish. I did not know that boys ever washed dishes. Of course I had 3 sisters! I never did any house work and of course I neveer saw them outside either. That is the way it was in the old days, I guess. When I Married Clara, all that changed. She wanted to spend most of her time helping me, so we did a lot of the house work together (not all of it). I especially remember the Sunday's that the whole Tripp family spent at your place. It seems that your place was the favorite place to meet. Do you remember the time that someone fell into the slop barrel, out by the water tank? We had to pull whoever it wit was out! What a mess. I can still remember the way he or she smelled on the way out! I think it was Donald. I am glad that we are a close knit family. Even though I have not been around much, I feel close to every member of our familyy! With Love Herman William Tripp--Remembering---- I am sending you a booklet that has an accumulation of "stories" from the past. The first story is about Zacheus Lester Tripp and his effort to save what was left of our family to be. If it were not for Zacheus, you and I would never have been here! As far as I am concerned he was the greatest hero among many heroes amongst our ancestors. He needs to be remembered. The booklet then follows with other sttories, starting with John the Founder, then each succeeding grandfather down to you and I. The book is full of things I have remembered about myself and our immediate family. I think that it would be smart if all of us did the same, and recorded for our children, and our childrens children, episodes that no one will know about otherwise. I have sent excerpts from the computer to other members of our family that show them their relationship with our ancestors. You of course hav have all of that in your computer. My goal is to do much more than I have done so far. I hope I live long enough to finish the job. I am glad that you have a computer and are recording what I have, plus what you have! Together, maybe we will get a lot done for the next generations to continue with. With Love Herman William Tripp--Remembering----

Donald George Tripp My First Cousin

Loyal Kitchen had just paid me three nickels, to haul water for their thrashing run. I am on my pony, Spot, with a one gallon jug of water hanging from each side of the saddle horn. Loyal was teasing me about something. He was always teasing somomeone. It was fun though. The teasing I mean, especially from Loyal or Georgie Kitchen. They had a way, about them that made you feel--like-- important, and you are doing something worthwhile. Donald, from these two uncles of your's, yoou have inherited that trait. Don't ever lose it! You are a joy to this whole Tripp Family. Every newcomer has to learn that Donald George Tripp is our "official initiator". We love you for it! Every family has to have someone to keep them lighne to keep them light hearted! And you keep us light hearted, even as our family slowly, but surely slip away into the "Forever". I do not get to spend as much time with the family as I would like, but I have a good memory! With Love Herman William Tripp--Remembering----

I am sending you a booklet that my two sisters have insisted that I write. It is about some of the stories that they have heard me tell from time to time. These stories are my memory of much data that we have discovered during the last 20 years family research during our travels around the country. The booklet starts off with the story of Zacheus Lester Tripp. I believe that he saved the family from total destruction during the dark days of pioneering in the mid 1800's. After Zacheus, I lead off with your eighth Great Grandfather John Tripp, the Founder's story. Peleg Tripp, son of John Tripp is next, and on down to you and I. I have filled the pages with little stories that I remember about our immediate family. I hope you, as well as other members of our family will write down various incidents of your past, so that our descendants can have insight into our lives, while we lived them, here on earth. Larry Lee Tripp My First Cousin

Larry Lee Tripp was the most mischevious, cutest, and brightest 3 year old that I had seen. All smiles, he was a big tease, whenever anybody was around for him to concentrate his attention on! I remember this little guy as if it were yesterday. He was fun to have around! Larry carried this attitude into adulthood, and into his business. He was a salesman! His personality was infectious. Larry came to Colorado, with his Dad in 1960, to help build all of the equipment for Ameriica's largest and most modern hog production unit ever built at that time! We enjoyed having him around, and he was very enthusiastic about what we were doing. One of my last conversations with Larry was about those days! He said that it had beeeen an important time in his life and, I am glad. I am glad, because, it was an important time in our lives also. Larry Lee Tripp was a mechanic. I have seen him drag home a broken down car, tear it down, fix it up, weld on it and make it look and run like new! He was a mechanic and a salesman, because now he sold it for a good price! And he was happy! That is the word for Larry--Happy. I think he is still happy now!! Herman William Tripp--Remembering----
