Henry Hyman Straw

Notes:

Moved to Winona Co 1855, preempted 160 acres, married, increased farm size to 225 acres, still living on land 1913. From Hist Winona Co, 1883 (Chicago, H.H.Hill & Co) Grandfathers Jacob Straw & David Gehr were natives of Westmoreland Co, PA, thhe latter was in the War of 1812. Both were farmers. H.H. started as clerk in general mdse store in Sagerstown PA at age 18, stayed 2 years. Went to Dubuque Co, IA, worked on a farm for 1 yr. Moved to Winona Co in May 1855, entered claim in Sec. 17, Saratoga Twp [W 1/2 SE 1/4 Sec 17, patented 3 Jy 1863, in tract book of US Dist Land Office, 1887; Tom's notes]. Member of No. 46 lodge of Masons (Evergreen) at Troy, MN. Democrat, was twp supervisor a number of years. Henry married Jane Rosamond Ingalls on 29 Dec 1857 in Saratoga, Winona Co, Minnesota. Jane (daughter of Henry Ingalls and Mary Bisbee) was born on 01 Mar 1841 in Concord, Erie Co, NY; died on 21 Apr 1925 in Minnesota, USA; was buried in Saratoga, Winona, MN. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In interview by Tom with Minnie Day, 1965: (with comments added) Stories about parents, Ann Ingalls Day, etc. Both Day families moved to Edgerton, Pipestone Co., MN, about 1877, along with Swains (Harriet Ingalls Day's dau Edith m Rev Carl Swaiain). George Straw met Dora May Turner in Edgerton when he went to visit cousin Days there (although, or maybe because, Sardis Turner family had also lived in Saratoga briefly when Dora May quite young). He apparently remained there, married and had first child, Alice, in Edgerton before moving to St. Paul.

Listed in 1865 census for Saratoga, Winona Co., MN.; also 1875, at age 16, and in US census of 1870, but not listed with family in 1880 US census for Saratoga Twp. Family notes say marriage in Edgerton MN performed by a Rev. Davis. Died May 11, 1918, a suicide, in St. Paul, MN. Buried in Oakland Cemetery, lot 10, block 3, in the city of St. Paul, on property owned by the Masons.

Adopted by Henry Hyman & Jane Ingalls Straw. Per letter Winona Area Genealogy Roundtable, listing for Saratoga Cemetery book #15, p. 25, as in row 15, stone 18. (6 Nov 1995). Martin Luhmann of Rochester MN is descendant of one of Bessie's siblings. Appears father, Lyman Ball, abandoned family of 12? children; mother, whose name is not known, died when Bessie was young, and the children were farmed out among local families. Unknow whether adoption was formal or not.
