  Notes from Bill Weir We've been able to trace our lineage back to Martha without much difficulty. However, we have not been able to conclusively determine who Martha's parents were. So far, the evidence we've seen is circumstantial. The following is a recent summary shared with a couple of my siblings: "It appears that Thomas Simmons and Elizabeth Manchester were the parents of Martha "Patty" Simmons, our great-great-great grandmother. No conclusive evidence, but..... Thomas's first wife, who died, was named Martha (Hart). Not unusual that a daughter with the 2nd wife, Elizabeth Manchester, could be named Martha. David Sanford married Eunice Simmons after Martha/"Patty" died in 1809. Eunice was the daughter of Gideon Simmons, Thomas's brother. So Eunice Simmons would have been Martha Simmons' cousin and already known to David (perhaps helping out during Patty's downward spiral). She would have been conveniently located in Tiverton RI, and at 27 years old, no doubt anxious to marry. David had several children at home after Patty died and he would have been happy to marry anyone to help manage the family. (David married Eunice about a month after Patty died.) Lots of coincidences here...."
