Bruce Biddle attended Northwestern College, New York University, also took a P.G. at Columbia University. When he was a senior at John Brown University, Siloam Springs Arkansas, he volunteered for sevice with the Merchant Marine, in August 1944. Whle on his first voyage as radio operator, on the S.S.Lewis which was carrying ammunition in the Pacific, was struck by a Japanese plane on Januray 4, 1945 near Leyte Island. Eye witnesses say the ship sank in sixteen seconds, without a single survivor. He was a descendant of Robert Bruce on his paternal side.
