  At age ten he went to Chicago and returned to LeRoy in 1859. At age 15 1/2 he enlisted in Co. "I", 6th U.S. Cavalry. He was on Sheridan's staff as dispatch bearer. He was discharged after three years. He bought Michigan Center Flouring Mill which burned in 1893. He became general manager of Jackson Ice Company.
