He went to Michigan in 1841 for a while to improve the family property there; he returned in 1849 to build a mill, with his brother George. In 1861 they built the Methodist Church. He farmed and ran the mill until 1868, when the mill and shops were sold. He was state representative in 1863-64 and 1877-79; vice-president of the county historical society 1872 and 1875, and candidate for Congress in 1884 and Lt. Governor in 1886. (MMC)
