Notes - References: Randall, Joseph manuscript from the New Bedford Library, 9th Cousin Breffni Whelan, descendant specializes on John's descendants. Bock: His will, dated 10 November 1753 and pr 2 July 1754, named wife and son Nathaniel as executors, but the wife renounced on 28 June 1754. Mentioned were sons Benjamin, Nathaniel, and Stokes and Daughter Catherine Tripp, Lydia Tripp, Bebecca Tripp and Elizabeth Gifford. The inventory on same day was L106.01.06. He bequeathed his homestead equally to sons Nathaniel and Stokes ( Bristol Probate Rec 14:117-23). After the death of Nathaniel in 1790, his heirs and Stokes made a division of the farm ( Bristol Land Rec., 13:75-7).
After the death of Stokes, Nathaneil's two daughters purchased his part of the farm from the heirs of Benjamin Tripp, Catherine Tripp and Elizabeth Gifford (ibid 14:499ff).
He was a freeman of the colony from Portsmouth on May 1, 1706 (Casey 55) and was possibly the Benjamin who was master mate of Sloop "Revenge" out of Newport (Joseph Jencks Smith, " Civil and Military List of Rhode Island, 1647-1800 (Providence 1900 2:691).
Sometime between the births of Nathaniel and Lydia, Benjamin and family moved from Portsmouth to Dartmouth, Massachusetts, where he owned some of the former Alden land (Valentine 147). Benjamin Tripp of Portsmouth Rhode Island purchased from Jeremiah Devil [sic] of Dartmouth 12 acres of land with house in Dartmouth on March 2, 1712/3 (Bristol LR1:382-3. Still of Dartmouth, a weaver, he purchased 10 acres land from Devel on March 27, 1713 (ibid 1:384-6. On 19 July 1715, now of Dartmouth, yeoman, he purchased 3 1/2 acres land from Nathaniel Soule of Dartmouth (ibid 2:491-2), and in 1718, a weaver, he purchased further land from Thomas Cornell of Dartmouth ( ibid, 489-90).
