    • !1)Winfield S. Stark, known to everyone as "Birdie" Stark was a member of a pioneer family of the Smethfield region. He was educated in the local schools and later learned the machinist trade at the Backus Novelty factory in Smethport. In the e early days of the motor industry the Backus Co. became the first distributors of Marmon and Studebaker automobiles in northwestern Pennsylvania and Mr. Stark was transferred to that division of the manufacturing concern. He soon gained deserved recognition as one of the foremost motor experts of this region and his experience was long and intensive from the infancy of motoring to the modern day stream-lined automobiles. When the Smethport Garage Co. was formed and took over the Backuis Novelty Co. automobile division, Mr. Stark became the conern's chief mechanic. He had a severe attack of gallstone trouble at age 43 and died at 1 o'clock of a heart attack in the hospital at Kane, Pa. 2)His consuming hobby and pride was the Smethport Fire Department, of which he had been a member for many years and it is largely due to his valuable, untiring efforts that Smethport possesses a fire fighting organization that is second to none in this section and possesses a wonderful assortment of motorized equipment.. He was a member of the Odd Fellows and a communicant of St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
