His father was b Ireland, and was an officer in the Irish Rebel Army and came to this country as a refugee in the year 17r 1798. [Robert] came to Seneca co with his father in March, 1812, and located on the farm where he now resides. In December, 1829 he m. Elizabeth Marsh, daughter of Benjamin Marsh of Tyre. [She died 7 July 1873]. He married Sarah P. Burroughs 7 June 1875. She is dau of Thos. Burroughs one of the early settlers of Varick. [Robert] was an influential member of First Presby Ch, Tyre, [later] of Presby Ch of Seneca Falls. In politics he is identified with the Democratic party and has [held] various official capacities... Supervisor; director of the Poor; as as Representative in State Legislature in 1845. Much interest in the [civil war] and was a War Democrat. [He] served with Thos W. Compson as a committee for the purpoose of raising men and money [for the war]. He . . managed the town in the [critical years after the war] in a very satisfactory manner. Mr. Stevenson is pleasantly located on one of the finest farms in the county and has the unbounded esteem of a large circle of friends and acquaintances." [there is a portrait of Robert Stevenson; along with a sketch of his house, some 8 rooms; fenced lot; landscaped; with three out-buildings; nicely kept]. Vol TV15, IM3, p. 43 states birthdate was 26 Jan 1807. This concurs with Seneeneca County History. 10)Source in #9, above, p. 47 states robert and Elizabeth were married 29 Dec 1839. This would have placed him in his 30s. The 1830 date seems more reasonable. 11)Obituary of this nephew, James F. Stevenson states, "He wawas a nephew of the late Hon. R.L. Stevenson, who was childless, and in his later years entrusted James with the management of his farms, making him executor of his will, and one of the heirs of his estate."
