Benjamin served in Civil War, volunteering from Brady Twp, Kalamazoo, Mi, Co A, 1st Regiment, Mich Inf. Enlisted at Ann Arbor 12 Sept 1861. Served as hospital cook through 22 Mar 1862. Re-enlisted 17 Feb 1864 at Beverly Ford, Va. Wounded 5 May 1864. Discharged 9 July 1865 at Jeffersonville, Ind.
