  • Notes
    • Frances Slocum was captured by Three Delaware Indians on November 11, 1778 from her home in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. She was not heard from again by her family until September 20,1837. Frances had been discovered in early January 1835 by a Col. George Ewing, a trader, but a letter to the post office at Lancaster, Pennsylvania was ignored by post mistress Mary Dickson. It lay for more than 2 years before a John W. Forney became aware of the letter and published a story about it in The Intelligencer. prominent newspaper at that time. This was the very newspaper that was formerly owned by Mary Dickson, at the time the letter was written.
