Frances had been discovered in early January 1835 by a Col. George Ewing, a trader, but a letter to the post office at Lancaster, Pennsylvania was ignored by post mistress Mary Dickson. It lay for more than 2 years before a John W. Forney became aware of the letter and published a story about it in The Intelligencer. prominent newspaper at that time. This was the very newspaper that was formerly owned by Mary Dickson, at the time the letter was written.
