1 | Brigham Young American leader in the Latter Day Saint movement and a settler of the Western United States. He was the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from 1847 until his death in 1877. He founded Salt Lake City and he served as the first governor of the Utah Territory. Young also led the foundings of the precursors to the University of Utah and Brigham Young University. Young was a polygamist, marrying a total of 55 wives, 54 of them after he converted to Mormonism. The policy was difficult for many in the church. Young stated that upon being taught about plural marriage, "It was the first time in my life that I desired the grave." By the time of his death, Young had 56 children by 16 of his wives; 46 of his children reached adulthood. In 1902, 25 years after Young's death, The New York Times established that Young's direct descendants numbered more than 1,000. In 2016 Young was estimated to have around 30,000 descendants. A Glimpse into Our Founders Life John Tripp, A Glimpse into Our Founder's Life by Janet Tripp Andrews © November, 2016 This paper is my way of getting to know our ancestor, John Tripp, who lived from 1611 to 1678 and immigrated from England to the New World. To do this I have combined some of the major events of the founding of Rhode Island and colonial life with the known activity of John, and through this synthesis he has begun to reveal himself. This exploration could not have been done without The Early Records of the Town of Portsmouth, Records of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in New England, and the multitude of genealogical research about the first colonists that provide what we know about John. |

8 | Tripp Genealogy & History Tripp is an English surname, from the Old French and Middle English trippere, referring to someone who tripped, particularly as a loose reference to a professional dancer. It could also be from the Old French tripe, referring to a meat merchant, particularly one who sold sausages as well. Tripp family history starts with Hugh Tripp, who was noted in the Hundred Rolls of Wiltshire in 1373. Some illustrious members of Tripp genealogy are children's literature illustrator and author Wallace Tripp, ambassador to Austria and law professor Bartlett Tripp, and his brother South Dakota Surveyor General and Maine Senate President William Tripp |
