    Notes:

Zacheus Lester Tripp was my Great Grand Uncle Zacheus Lester "SAVED THE TRIPP FAMILY" Tripp If there is one person that has earned "SAVED THE TRIPP FAMILY" name, it is Zacheus Lester Tripp. Riding down the Ohio River oon a raft built by his father David R. Tripp, Zacheus at the young age of 4, arrived in Evansville Indiana to help his family start a new life "out west". The David R.Tripp family and David's sister Polly Tripp Millard's family arrived in Indianana in the year 1838. Records show that the Millards settled near Blairsville, Posey County, Indiana. The records show that the Tripps were in the neighboring county of Gibson for a while, at least Mary was born there in 1842. Coming down the river with Zacheus, was older brother Ralph, older sister Caroline, and younger brother Jonathan. Barney S. was born shortly after arrival but died six weeks later, no doubt caused by all the stress involved in the big move. William Henry Harrison Tripp was born in 1840 and obviously named after the president of the United States, then came Mary Adeline in Gibson County on August 26,1842. Nancy Jane was born in 1844 and before David our Great Grandfather was born tragedy struckck! David R. Tripp the father died. We do not know why. The cholera epidemic had not arrived as yet, but there was of course, other diseases rampant on the new frontier. David was born Feb 3 1846, 3 months and 5 days after his father died 0ctobeber 29,1845. Tragedy was just beginning! Ralph Tripp, the eldest, married Martha Davis on 5-20-1853, Little John (named after his grandfather) was born in 1854 and by October 11 1855, the whole family was dead! Martha died May 4, 1855, Ralph died 3 days later on May 7, 1855, and little John died October 11 1855 at the home of his maternal grandfather. Imagine the despair of losing a whole family at one time. There is however, more tragedy to remember! Caroline had married Henry Lewis Burris and had a son James Wilton Burris born 11-21-1854. Caroline died 4-4-1855 exactly one month before Martha, her sister-in-law was to die. Little James W. was evidentley taken in by his Grandmother Betsy Tripp to raise, for awhile. For awhilele, because by February 15,1858 Betsy was dead! A Tripp family that in 1850 census was intact except for the father David R. was doomed for history! The family was falling to pieces, imagine the despair, imagine the horror of burying member afteer member of this once happy family. According to the 1850 census the family, for various reasons had split up to the extent that Nancy Jane Tripp was living with her Aunt Polly at Blairsville, Posey County Indiana, next door to where Zacheus waas living with a Doctor Mitchell. We feel that he was probably farming the Doctor's land nearby. Doctor Mitchell had married Zacheus's cousin Jane, daughter of his Aunt Polly. In 1857, Zacheus married Nancy Johnson Blue Across the river in Unioion County Kentucky, and on September 17,1858 he buried his first born daughter Lesteria A. next to his wife's sister, Lesteria's aunt who had died at about 18 years of age. The death of his little daughter occurred just 7 months after Betsy, hiis mother had died up in Indiana. I think at this point Zacheus made a decision! His older brother and his brother's wife and son John were gone: His older sister was gone, leaving a son to raise; His mother and father were gone; his firsst born daughter was gone and who knows what next. He took under his wing what was left of the Tripp family. He brought over from Indiana his brother William, his sisters Mary and Nancy and little brother David. He also brought over James Wiltonon, Catherine's son. I believe that Jonathan may have stayed behind, to farm the home place until he died in 1860. He did save the family! Zacheus, William, and David farmed together, I am sure, with the help of Mary Adeline, Nancy Jane, and little James Wilton Burris. They were all together till the Civil War when William fought for the South, Zacheus and David fought for the North. After the war they all farmed together again! David met and married Mary Evaline Williamson from which our family has decended through John William Tripp. We now number 78 descendants of John William Tripp and over 40,000 descendants of John Tripp the Founder!! Herman William Tripp--Remembering----Dear James Wilton Burris II As you can see James, the family has had quite a time! I suppose it was no different then, than now, when I think of the car accidents and cancer victims of today. I am sending you printout of some things that hopefully will whet your appetite for more. If you have a computer or can make use of one, send for the program from the enclosed form and I will send you free of charge discs containing over 22000 names of descendants of John the Founder. Notes:

David R. Tripp was the fourth son and the sixth child of John Tripp, son of Job Tripp, son of Isaac Tripp, son of Job Tripp, son of Peleg Tripp, son of John Tripp the Founder. He married Betsy Osgood in New York and they had ten children. David R. Tripp seemed to be a restless type of person, because he made several major moves during his lifetime. First he and his family moved from Luzerne County in the northeastern part of the state of Pennsylvania to the extreme southwestern part of the state to Washington County. Some Tripps preceeded him there, because the 1820 census showed that a Ralph Tripp, and a Mrs. Tripp, lived in Washington County at that time. They were no doubt some relation, but how, has not been determined. David R. Tripp's second big move began early in 1838, when he and his sister Polly decided to build a raft to live on, while they floated down the Ohio River. What an undertaking! They may not have been the first to tackle this job, but it certainly made news. There has been several references of the feat in the records of that time. We do not, of course know all the facts, but we know that it would have had to be quite a raft, to hold at least two sets of parents and eight children. Imagine: where did everyone sleep?; how did they protect themselves in rainy weather?; did they have enough to eat with them, or did they stop along the way to find food? The story is, that the trip took up to three months!! They did make it, all the way to Evansville Indiana by the fall of 1838, however, and I'll bet that they were glad! The records show that Polly Tripp, her husband Solomon Millard, and their family settled near Blairsvillle, Posey County, Indiana. We have found some of the family's graves there, and the census of 1850 show that some of the family was still there then. David R. Tripp's whereabouts are less clear. We know that Mary Adeline was born in a neighboring county-Gibson, and we know that they eventually settled farther on, in Davies County.

David R. Tripp was thirty-five years old when he planned and made this trip, but as happy as they probably were with this adventure, the rigors of the wilderness and strains thus attributed, no doubt caused an early death. He died in 1845 only 42 years of age. Before he died though, David R. and Betsy had 10 children, one of which was born 3 months and 3 days after his death.

    Notes:

John Tripp was the second son of Job Tripp, son of Isaac Tripp, son of Job Tripp, son of Peleg Tripp, son of John Tripp the Founder. His older brother Isaac was the Grandson of Isaac Tripp, who was captured by the Indians, then taunted by them, while they killed two of his friends and scalped them. He was then sold to the British in 1778. This happened during the Revolutionary war.

John Tripp was born in Middletown, Pennsylvania. He married Martha Phillips, daughter of Deacon John Phillips. John Tripp was a farmer there in Pennsylvania and died fairly young, before January 20, 1820. The reason we mention this date, is that John Phillips died on that date, and left David R. Tripp, John's son, a farm, "because his father had died previously." John Phillips, of course, was David Ralph Tripps grandfather.

John Tripp was, an extensive land holder and it is assumed that he divided this land amongst his children. He and Martha had seven children, all born in Pennsylvania. Bock: Land Records information can be found in Dean. (Randall; Peleg Tripp 4,9; Arnold 4:18; Dean 14,22-4).
