In 1635 he returned to England for a short time but was back in Roxbury before Nov 20, 1637 when he and others were warned to give up all arms because "the opinions and revelations of Mr. Wheelwright and Mrs. Hutchinson have seduced and led into dangerous errors many of the poeople here in New England". They were among those who were banished from Mass. with Mr. Anne Hutchinson in 1638. The Rev. John Eliot, in his record of Church Members of the First Church at Roxbury, states:!RECOORDS: "Phillip Serman, he came into the Land in the year 1633, a single man, & after married Sarah Odding, the daughter of the wife of John Porter, by a former husband. this man was of a melancholy temp, he lived honestly and comfortable among us several years. Upon a just calling went for England, & returned againe with a blessing: But after his father in Law John Porter was so caryed away with those opinions of familisme, & scizme, he followed them and removed with them to the Iland, he behaved himself sinfully in those matters and was cast out of the church." OUR ANCESTOR, IN 1634 EMIGRATED TO NEW ENGLAND. SETTLED They went to the island of Aquidneck which was to become part of Rhode Island where, on Mar 7, 1638, at the place called Pocasset and later to be named Portsmouth, he with 18 others signed a Compact to incorporate into a "Body Politick". On May 13, 1638 he was present at a General Meeting held there. On the advice of Roger Williams, the group purchased the Island of Aquidneck from the Indians and obtained title from the Indian sachems on Jul 1, 1639, at a meeting held Jul 1, 1639 the town was named Portsmouth, a regular government was established and he was chosen Secretary.

The early records of Portsmouth, prepared by him, showed him to be a neat and expert penman as well as an educated man. He signed his name "Philip Shearman". He left the Congregational Church and joined the Society of Friends. His will dated Jul 31, 1681 was proved Mar 22, 1686/7. His wife, Sarah, was living when his will was written. IN ROXBURY, MASS. IN THE ANNE HUTCHINSON TROUBLE IN BOSTON HE TOOK THE POPULAR SIDE, BUUT AS GOV. WINTHROP FINALLY PREVAILED, HE WITH OTHERS FOUND IT CONVENIENT TO EMIGRATE TO RHODE ISLAND. IN PROVIDENCE THEY MET ROGER WILLIAMS WHO ADVISED THEM TO PURCHASE THE ISLAND OF AQUETNET, NOW RHODE ISLAND, OF THE INDIANS. THE PURCHASE WAWAS COMPLETED 24 MAR 1638. ON 1 JUL 1639, THEY ESTABLISHED A REGULAR GOVERNMENT, WITH WM. CODDINGTON, GOVERNOR, AND PHILLIP SHERMAN, SECRETARY. AFTER THIS HE OFTEN HELD OFFICE IN THE COLONY, AND IN CRITICAL PERIODS. HE WAS A MAN OF INTELLIGENCE, WEALTH, AND INFLUENCE, AND FREQUENTLY CONSULTED BY THOSE IN AUTHORITY. THE EARLY RECORD PREPARED BY HIM STILL REMAINS IN PORTSMOUTH, AND SHOW HIM TO HAVE BEEN A NEAT AND SKILLFUL PENMAN, AS WELL AS AN EDUCATED MAN. AFTER HE EMIGRATED TO RHODE ISLAND HE LEFT THE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, AND UNITED WITH THE SOCIETY OF FRIENDS. TRADITION AFFIRMS HE WAS A DEVOUT AS WELL AS A DETERMINED MAN. DICT OF R. I. He was a clothier in Dedham and also a yeoman (tilled his own land), lived at Dedham and in later years at Ardleigh in Essex. He mar. Philippa---, usually thought to be Philippa Ward, the sister of Robert Ward of Colchester. He died at Ardleigigh in Jan or Feb 1615/16. His will dated Jan 20, 1615/16 was proved Mar 2, 1615/16, was signed by his mark. His wife survived him. In the will he devised to his wife and children many parcels of land, house, etc. as well as the usual personal items and money indicating that he was a wealthy man. He gave to his sons Philip and Samuel, or the survivor of them, the dwelling house in Dedham including other buildings, garden, etc. Also to Philip, five parcels of land lying nerar the dwelling house.

Samuel married Phillippa Ward about 1598 in England. Phillippa was born in 1577 in Colchester, Colchester Borough, Essex, England; died in 1617 in Colchester, Colchester Borough, Essex, England; was buried in Dedham, Colchester Borough, Essex, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

The sister of Robert Ward of Colchester. In 1656, Philip SHERMAN received 10lb. form his cousin John Ward of Ipswich, Suffolk, England, giving support to the identity of his mother as Philippa WARD.

Margaret _______ ODDING was born in England, parentage and place of birth unknown. She Married in England ____ODDING who died there. She Mar. (2) there John Porter. They were Puritans and came to America in the group with John Winthrop in the Winthrop fleet in 1630, being listed as John Porter, his wife Margaret and four children, and shown as being from, perhaps, Bromfield in Essex. They settled at Roxbury, Mass. and are listed in the Rev. John Eliot's Record of Members of the First Church there. He was admitted freeman there Nov 5, 1633. They removed to Boston and became followers of Mrs. Anne Hutchinson. On Nov 20, 1637 he was on of the several of her followers who were disarmed and they were among those who were banished from Mass. with her in the spring of 1638 to be among the first settlers of Rhode island. They went to the island called Aquidneck which would later become part of Rhode Island, and settled at a place that would become Portsmouth. On Maar 7, 1638, there, he and 18 others signed a Compact to incorporate in a "Body Politick". In 1665 they were living in Kingstown, R.I. where, May 3, 1665 Margaret petitioned the Assembly complaining that her husband did not give her suitable care, that he had left her and that she was near dependence on her children for support......... . The Court ordered that all of his real and personal estate be secured until he has made a complete settlement. This was done and on Jun 27, 1665 he was released from the restraint by the Court. This is the last record found of Margaret. children by John Porter: Hannah, b. ----, d. Apr 6, 1722: m. prob at Portsmouth, Samuel Wilbor, son of Samuel Wilbor of Boston. References! He was the cousin Henry Sherman mentioned in the will of Pierce Butter of Colchester, dated Aug 1599, also the "Henry Sherman the Elder" appointed as a co-executor. His will dated Aug 21, 1610 was proved Sep 8, 1610, In their wills were mentioned their children.The bequests included the manor of Dedham Hall of about 20 acres, and other houses and land, also personal items and money.
