I am very glad we discovered the California Tripps, our long lost relatives. Enclosed is a printout of your ancestory, back to Nathaniel of England and John the Founder, the first Tripp coming to the United States, in 1635 on t the ship Truelove. You and Hazel are certainly maintaining a nice home there, and Clara and I have enjoyed reading some of your writings. As you can see we are eighth cousins, one time removed. Your ancestory goes back to Joseph Tripp, son of John Tripp the Founder and I go back to his brother Peleg Tripp, son of John Tripp, the Founder. Herman William Tripp--Remembering----

    Notes:

Samuel Volturner Tripp was "bound out" to a man to work for his keep as was the custom in those days, when widows could not support all the children. In 1850 he joined a wagon train, leaviving St Joseph, Missouri bound for California. Parts of the diary he wrote on the way and after arriving in California. Jewell Tripp Roberts has a copy.

He arrived in Placerville (Hang Town) where he worked in the mines for a while, but spent most of his time raising garden produce to sell to the miners. From there he went to Trinity country where there was another gold strike.

He was around Weaverville where he also raised vegetables to sell to the miners. He and another man had a pack train to carry supplies to the miners.

He and his partner went to Oregon and bought hogs which they were driving to California. The Indians attacked, killing the partner and scattering the hogs. He escaped and made his way back to Weaverville.

He had smallpox, which was very serious at that time, but survived. He married Rose Ann Ramsey. They moved from Shasta County to Los Angeles where he worked as a brick mason.

When Los Angeles was growing, most of the better buildings were brick. The brick masons at that time made and fired their own bricks and used lime mortar. Cement wasn't available at the time. When the old buildings were taken down, they paid for used brick rather than new brick making them cost more than new.

After Six children and Rose Ann's death in Yucalpa, California he moved to San Bernadino, California, where he married Caroline Covington, in 1872. He and Caroline had 10 children.

The Hemet, California paper, on Friday, May 2, 1924 headlined: FATHER OF TRIPPS PIONEER RESIDENT
Inseparably linked with the history of the San-Jacinto Valley is the pioneer Tripp family. The original member of the family to locate here was S.V. Tripp, who died in 1892. He crossed the plains to California in 1853, going first to Shasta and Trinity counties, where he conducted a pack train from the mining camps to San Francisco. S. V. Tripp was a brick mason by trade. He assisted in the erection of the first brick building in Los Angeles. In 1860 he went to San Bernardino, where he erected the first jail in that city. Coming to Riverside County, he devoted himself to ranching in the vicinity of San Jacinto.

For several years he served as justice of the peace for San Jacinto Township, and it was before him that Sam Temple, murderer of Alessandro, appeared for trial.

The transcript of the testimony in that trial was printed in The News several weeks ago. In Hellen Hunt Jackson's book, "Ramona," the Judge Wells of the story is Mr. Tripp. S.V. Tripp was twice married, his first wife having been Rosa Ramsey of Ohio. Six children were born of this union. Four of them still living in this vicinity ar are Shasta A. Tripp, O.C. Tripp, William B. Tripp and Mrs. Q. Reed. After the death of his first wife Mr. Tripp married Caroline Covington of Mississippi. They became the parents of ten children.

The above story is a copy sent to me with a picture of Samuel Volturner Tripp that was printed in the paper with the story. Thanks to Sally Tripp of Red Bluff California. I think that he is worth knowing about and remembering.

The official brand owned by Samuel Volturner Tripp was a "Letter T over a letter W connected, over inverted quarter circle. The location of the brand was to be on the left hip. The ear mark was to be a notch in the lower right ear and the left ear split after the end was clipped off." This brand and earmark have been handed down to Sally Loraine Tripp, great granddaughter.

    Notes:

    * DNA Analysis on Tripp Project testing
When you log into the Tripp FamilyTreeDNA admin account you and run the YDNA Genetic Distance report. Click on J. Judd Tripp and look at his YDNA matches. He is an exact match for Jack Howard Tripp Jr at 37 markers thus they match up in modern times; Robert Hugh Tripp at 3 steps and Harold Douglas Tripp II at 3 steps. Since Roger Hugh Tripp and Harold Douglas Tripp II had upgraded, look at the 111 markers tab and on the far right of their names click the “Time Predictor” to see where he (Judd) matches up with each of them. Remember the higher the number of markers tested the more well defined timeline results you’ll get so looking at 37 markers at Jack Howard Tripp dates would be a larger gap than looking at 111 markers for a time line of MRCA.

When you look at Roger Hugh Tripp (111 markers) it shows he matches Judd around 1750 and Harold Douglas Tripp (111 markers) at abt. 1700 on the Time Predictor. What both of these two individuals have in common is they both come down son’s of Abiel4 (1718), Job3, Peleg2, John1. This proves that Judd (and Jack Howard Tripp Jr) come through the same line and the SNP mutation happened sometime around Abiel4 via another son of Abiel (1718). More than likely since he matches Roger Hugh Tripp at c.1750 which is through Abiel5, Abiel4, Job3, Peleg2, John1 it is through this line that we will find the proof of Sally’s line (Jack Howard Tripp & Judd Tripp).
