    Notes:

According to Thomas Roderick- E-Mail Cousin, This William Tripp was the real co-founder of the Rhode Island Red Hens. Randall had guessed that it was a Philip Tripp instead.

Referencing Thomas Roderick, The Randall book, on page 34 says of my Julius "(a descendant says he had a brother Philip of Rhode Island who originated the Rhode Island Red Hens)" I suspect that was one of the reasons Randalall thought Julius' father was a Philip Tripp. We have no evidence of a brother of Julius named Philip Tripp, although there may be one. According to the Randall book, Julius gave the middle name "Philip" to his first son Leander. But descendants of that family only acknowledged the middle initial "P" and never agreed that it stood for Philip. I suspect the middle name Philip was correct. The rumor about the Rhode Island Reds could have come from Leander's son Charles Soranus Tripp borrn 1854, part of whose business was raising chickens. But I am sure the credit for the Rhode Island Reds goes to William Tripp. Thank you Thomas Roderick.

New story about the little red hen from Richard Gifford: The Rhode Island Red was developed by William Tripp ( 1812-1891 ) at his farm in Little Compton, Rhode Island. He purchased a Chittagong rooster that was brought back to New Bedford, Massachusetts by a sailor involved in the China trade. After letting it run around with his Leghorns, he noticed that the offspring were heartier and laid more eggs. He worked in conjunction with a farmer from Westport Massachusetts named Macomber at first and carried on the work of refining the breed after Macomber died. These fowl werre initially known as "Tripp's Yaller ( yellow ) hens" (although they weren't yellow at all). It was Isaac C. Wilbour, who used the breed and ran "the biggest poultry farm in the world" ( about 1900) in Little Compton Massachusetts, who came up with the name Rhode Island Red. Around 1925 a monument was put up in Adamsville commemorating the development of this breed. Tripp's daughter Becky was furious that the plaque wasn't placed at the site of the Tripp farm on Long Highway, and eventually a smaller plaque was placed there as well. One of the things I found curious about the chicken business in those days, is that the hens were not fed grain. Instead, a dough was cooked overnight in a large vat, with potatoes, corn, and turnips thrown in.
