"Just a note to let you know that your Uncle Bill Tripp passed away Easter Sunday morning, April 10, 1977. Infection in the toe of his remaining foot started and they came to Detroit for treatment at Botsford. They amputated the toe and found out later that the infection was all thru his heel. He remained in good spirits however until the Sat. nite before his death when his lungs filled up. They had a lot of Drs. working on him and he rallied enought to say goodby to Clara. She went home to her sisters and they called her at 4 in the morning to say that he was gone. Only Lester ramains." 4)He had diabetes. RG Tripp.

address: Freesoil, Mich 49411, phone 616-464-7196 Clara has "about 10" family portraits in her basement. four of those were photographed by P. Tripp, about 1960, and are in his collection, including photos of Theron, Joseph and James, all brothhers of Jess. The fourth photo is of an unknown man, about 68, who I conclude is Joseph Leonard Hill (1842-1917), father of Emma Etta Hill, who resided in Freesoil, member of Reorganized Church. The remaining family portraits should be studied, photographed, and best guesses made of who the person is. This is urgent, because of the local townspeople who might know of this Freesoil family.

Priore temple ordinance data was: Baptism 17 Aug 1965 UK temple Endowment 21 Jan 1966 UK temple Seal to Parents 21 Feb 1968 SL temple !1)From the birth certificates of his seven children, he was employed as a mill hand (1890), laborer (1892), and as a farmer (1896-1907). I got a certified copy of record of marriage (24 Aug 1889) for him and Emma E. Hill on 27 oct 1986, which shows place of marriage, Freesoil, and names RLDS Eldlder John J. Cornish as official marrying them, and gives Robert Kenyon and Alice Baker as witnesses. It also names parents except it spells Emily W. Beebe and doesn't give Joseph Hill's wife's name, who is Margaret Jane Dickson. Strange. Ageges at marriage: He 26, she 19. 2) To me his life is one of tragedy. I need to know more of it, but he seemed to remain silent in his separation from Emma. He didn't seem to be able to get close to his children, worked faithfully throughout hiis life, and died separate from his wife and family. The children were divisive, angry. I sense this tragedy as an outgrowth of Emma's embitterment, her disillusionment with life, her children, her husband. Where did this come from? Are there childhood school records? For Jess, at Cass Technical. What events in Detroit are documented? The tragic deaths of two of the sons? There just wasn't much communication. Much feeling. Much closeness. Some, at the later years, between ththe children, admittedly. 3)We go round and round on his birth date. Van Buren county record, per PLT ARCHIVES V23, gives CENSUS: (SEE James William Tripp notes) with Willie age five. The accuracy of the census record is high, correlating witith birth dates for all other children, thus I must conclude William Thomas was born about Feb 1865 (to fit 10 months after Nellie, but before census date of 24 June 1870. But to fit for Charlie, he needs to be born 10 months before 11 Feb 1866, which gives a range of Feb 1865 through May 1865. The October 17 part definitely does not fit. I choose a mid-point calculated birth of April 1865. Jeez, Emily, a child in 1864,5,6,7,8 and 1870 . . one every year. James was really home from the war, eh? William's old date, 17 Oct 1862, is hereby discarded. However, the marriage certificate verifies his birth occurred before 24 Aug 1863, which does NOT jive with the 1870 Census. This matter continues to be moot.PLT 4)PLT Archives, Vol TV19 IM7. Note: Grandpa Tripp's Brother's daughter: Ceceile McLolin, 4341 Buckingham Road, Royal Oak, MI. Li 9-3068. Notes:

!1)Per "Doll Index", a William Tripp had a letter awaiting him on 1 Jan 1838 at Saline PO, having arrived Apr 6, 1837. Per Chas Quick. 2) You can see the challenges of his life in the statistics of his family. Ten children and his wife dies leaving him a difficult parenting task. Children aged 2,3,4,6,8,9,10,12,14,17 and 18. What a task! The 1880 census shows his family split apart. Sad. Then, the story of his death, by burning to death in a fire in his house (per death record, PPaw Paw, Mich, now in V23 PLT ARCHIVES--see note 8 for details, below) in 1889, the youngest three orphaned at ages 15, 16, 17. There must be a newspaper account of her death, later his. Oh, so much opportunity in our statistics to fill in with facts from additional sources. A real Michigan Pioneer, James was born in New York, but settled early in Michigan, building much of Covert, giving the land for the cemetery where he is buried, and as I recall, the land for the school. Settlining early in Covert, in the early 1860's. And, I keep forgetting, a civil war veteran. What a lot of information must be in that file in Washington. 3) Three newspaper clippings, typed copies in V18 PLT ARCHIVES, relate reunions of James William Tripp family Thanksgiving 27 Nov 1913, again Thanksgiving 1914, and another in Covert, date not stated. 4)7/89: The original notepaper of births of children of Thomas and Nancy gives 8 Jun not 5 Jun as his birthday. 5)CENSUS, 1880 COVERT: Jamemes 55; Lester 14; Roy 12; Robert 10; Newton 5; Nancy 8. CENSUS, 1870 COVERT: J.W.bNY 46; Emily bNY 29; Effie 12; Lilly 10; Nellie 6; Willie 5; Charlie 4; Lester 3; Rosy 2; Robert 11mo. 6)Tombstone gives 29 Jan 1889 as death date, age 64y7m24d. Van Buren county death records, per PLT ARCHIVES V23, gives 30 Jan 1889 as death date, at Covert; cause: "Burned in House". Sextant record, per PLT ARCHIVES V23, says he was buried 30 Jan 1889. Therefore, I accept 29 Jan as death date; 30 Jan as buriel date. JWT and Emily buried lot 148, Covert Cemetery, per PLT ARCHIVES V23. 7)Perry Tripp reported JWT was a butcher, per PLT ARCHIVES V23. 8)"he was living alone in his home in Covert. . climbed up in his attic to go to bed (and) acaccidentally knocked down his kerosene lamp and set the house afire and he was burned to death. He was 64, blind in one eye and had a lame leg." Perry Tripp, per PLT ARCHIVES V23 9)About 1960-65 brother John Tripp obtained a photo of James Wm in his Civil War Uniform, didn't he? Where is the photo? 10)James W., d. 1/29/1889, age 64 y., 7m., 24 d. (thus born 5 Jun 1824) Source: Letter of 1 Jun 1959 from the Michigan Section of the Michigan State L??, 125 East Shiawassee Street, Lansing, MI citing records of Covert Cemetery, Van Buren County, MI (See PLT Archives, Vol TV19 IM4.)

    Notes:

n1)On 7 feb 87 April Tripp acted as proxy in sealing Emily to parents. Jeffery Tripp was proxy for Gardner Beebe, Emily's father. 2) Emily, we hardly know you. . : Married at 18, mothering 9 or 10 in 19 years, dead at age 37. Death from tuberculosis (the death certificate says CONSUMPTION), probably complicated from bearing so many children. Your great-grandfather, Ezekial, a revolutionary war veteran, forgotten in his later years, and where was Gardner and Allen? They're a little losst to me. Much research possible here. Did we all forget you too? When you die early, who can remember you? I'd like to read the obituary. And, find other records that illuminate your life. I wonder about the marriage. 1856. Hmmm. Wheree? James had moved with his father to Michigan in 1837, hadn't he. He was only 13. While, Emily must have stayed with her family in Seneca County. Or, did the Beebe's come to Michigan also? Strange. So, they must have married in Michigan, iin 1856. Certainly their children were born there. Married in Jackson? Maybe the Beebes moved to Jackson. Still, hard to figure out how 13 year old James connected 19 years later with Emily, born in Seneca county just about when James migrated to Michigan. 3) Her death date, 15 Mar 1876, at Covert, (she was "born NY") per death records, Paw Paw, Van Buren county, per V23,PLT ARCHIVES. The death record states her age, 28y9m, which calculates to a birth date of 15 Jun 1847, a nine year difference in birth dates, from the "accepted" date of 4 Jul 1838. The tombstone gives d:15 Mar 1876, "37y8m11d" which calculates to b: 4 Jul 1838, which is the "accepted" date of birth. 7/89, per PLT. 4)Tripp, Emily H., wife of James W., d. 3-15-1876, age 37 y., 8 m., 11 d. (thus born 4 July 1838) See source letter in note #10 of husband, James William Tripp Robert H. Tripp-One of the native sons of Covert township, of the type in which it has every reason to take pride, is robert HH. Tripp, foreman of the great fruit farm of C. J. Monroe, and the owner of a fine ten acre fruit farm. He is one of the most successful of Michigan horticulturists. Mr. Tripp is of that type of citizen who insprires and retains the confidence o of his fellow men and he has with great satisfaction to all concerned held e important offices of the township treasurer and highway commissioner. Mr. Tripp was born in this township, October 17, 1870, the son of James and Emily (Beebe)Tripp, who came here from the state of New York. Both are now deceased. These good citizens became the parents of the ten children listed. Mr. Tripp acquired his education in the public schools and early began his career as an agriculturist. In fact, his practical experience began at the age of fourteen years and in a short time he was initiated into the many mysteries of seed-time and harvest. Fourteen years ago Mr. C. J. Monroe, proprietor of the well-known and very extensive Monroe fruit farm, proffered the subject the position of manager and superintendent of the same, and he has ever since fulfilled its reponsibilities in the most stisfactory and successful manner. His own ten acre fruit farm is a model of its kind and shows the results of those scientific investigations made in recent years in the fields of agriculture and horticulture. On July 15, 1890, Mr. Tripp laid the foundation of a happy house hold and congenial life companionship by his union with Susan Bender, daughter of Frederick and Sara (Echingbeer) Bender, the former of whom was a native of the children listed. Mr. Tripp a Republican in political conviction and has been found marching beneath the standard of the "Grand Old Party" since his earliest voting days. His public offices have been mentioned in a preceding paragraph. Mr. and Mrs. Tripp attend the Congregational church.
