    Notes:

My Dad always loved the hills, back hollers, and other out of the way places. I never could understand why, until Mrs. Leroy Warren who is 100 years old directed me to the old farm, where Dad spent a lot of his time in his younger days. Now those are hills that are hills! It looked to me that only horses could be used to farm the land. There are plenty of trees, creeks and gullies to make anyone with that calling happy.

Clara and I have visited several old Tripp stomping grounds, and it seems to us that hills and hollers had a particular calling for Tripps. Davies County Indiana was such a place. Most of the land is farmed now, but there are plenty of trees, hills and hollers to call the Trippps home. That is where they are buried; on the hills amongst the trees! That's another story. When I was a little boy I went everywhere with my Dad. As I have said before, he fastened a seat on the horse drawn single row cultivator especially fofor me, and I used it! We talked a lot. I can still hear the cultivator shovels cutting through the soil. I can smell the fresh dirt as it was turned up black, fresh and moist. I can hear the birds whooshing in to catch the earthworms before they could "dig in". I can still hear the harnesses squeaking as Joe and Bell or Florie and Bill bulled into it to pull us along. I can smell the sweat on a hot day as they seemed to enjoy doing their job. The growing corn was beautiful. We cultivated together, we harnessed and unharnessed the horses, we milked the cows, fed the pigs, fed the calves and we sawed wood. My fondest memories are the chilly days we would cut down a tree, trim the branches and saw the trunk into 18 inch long chunks. Dad always said that his Dad, could beat anybody trimming the branches from the tree trunk with his axe, and do it before the dust settled around a newly fallen tree. I thought my Dad did pretty good himself! He wasn't much for bragggging though. I marveled at the way he could cut through the thick branches with chips flying in every direction with every swing of his axe. At eight or nine years of age I could not do so well, but he would say "When you have chopped up as manny trees as I have, and are as old as I am, you will be able to do even better than I, maybe as good as your Grandpa!" I did improve with age, I think. Time passed as it always does, we moved, we farmed, and eventually we graduated to tractor farming. We farmed 240 acres together and one day I had an opportunity to rent 160 acres of land 11 miles away near Spring Lake. I talked to my brother-in-law-Dick Miller about going with me 50-50 and farming it together. He was interested, bubut his landlady would not let him, so I intended to let the opportunity go. Dad was not getting any younger, in fact he was old, I thought then. He said "Go ahead son, take the place, I will help you!" That was one of greatest things that ever happened to me and my Dad. We had the equipment, we had the time, and we worked together farming that place. One day when we were finishing up combining oats at the Spring Lake place, the main chain flopped around and broke into a thousasand pieces. It was 6 o'clock Saturday night. I had two rounds to go to finish this field. It was going to rain. I was fit to be tied, because I always want to finish up Saturday night. There was a big rock there at the corner of the field and my Dad sat down on it, surveyed the situation, surveyed the countryside and said "Well, quite an experience!!" That was my Dad.---- Herman William Tripp--Remembering----

Joseph Raymond Tripp was the eldest son of John William Tripp, son of David Tripp, son of David Ralph Tripp, son of John Tripp, son of Job Tripp, son of Isaac Tripp, son of Job Tripp, son of Peleg Tripp, son of John Tripp the Founder. Herman William Tripp--Remembering----

May 30, 1993 It is 8 PM, and I Remember......My Dad and the flag covering his casket. He would have been so proud... Tomorrow, Memorial Day his flag will wave with others who fought in wars for our country. So many things, I do not know. He did not seem to want to talk about it....... I wish I knew!! I know that he sailed to France arriving in Brest, with his outfit. He told me that many died with the flu on the way over and that the average life span at the front linines for machine gun companies, was 32 seconds. Imagine the fear and concern that he and his buddies had on arrival in that war torn country. Luckily the war ended with an Armistice on November 11, 1918, shortly before he arrived at the front. On his return to the United States though, he saw his buddy die of the flu shipboard. He and his buddy with numerous others, trying so hard to return home alive! We never tired of looking at and thinking about the history of his canteen, his cup and utensils; the French coins that he passed on to us. Dad is gone now...and I wish I knew more......

    Notes:

Florence Marjorie Shedd July 28, 1991 My Mother

July, 28, 1923. Today I was born! What an exciting life you brought me into! You never did tell me that I was born on your mother's birthday. I did not learn about that fact, until I began doing ancestral search. I assume, that you wanted me to accept Grandpa Shedd's new wife, Anna Pratt Shedd, as my grandmother. I did, thanks to your acceptance of her, and the fact that you always referred to her as Grandma Shedd, to us kids. I appreciate that fact. I wish, however, that I had known, that I was born on my original Grandma Shedd's birthday, so that I could have remembered her, as I do today! Herman William Tripp--Remembering----

To my Mother, I remember back when I was 3 years old. The first birthday I remember clearly though, was my 5th birthday, and my 5th birthday cake! You remembered to make me a birthday cake, every single year, as long as you lived! Everry one of those cakes in my memory, was an angel food cake, made for me with the proper number of candles on it. What a treat to look forward to each year, not for the cake especially, but for the remembering of my birth date. I rememberer, my 10th birthday, like it was yesterday. It was special. I wanted to go over to Lynn's place to play and you would not let me. I did not like that and I said, "Its my birthday and you should let me do whatever I want to do.." Pretty soon Lynynn came over to my place, then all the Hansen girls ( Marie, Marjorie, Mable, Ruby, and Luella) came, bringing pigeons for presents. About this time I was beginning to feel sheepish. You had secretly planned this party for me and I did not knoow anything about it! It was my very first surprise party and was I ever surprised! Before the day was over, more than a dozen friends and relatives had come over and did we have fun! After the party I had enough baseballs and other gifts to last a long-long time! I remember numerous other birthdays, when, that ever present birthday cake was there for me, and the every year birthday dinner, with all our family present. Those were the days to remember!! Herman William Tripp--Remembering----

July 15, 1993 On July 28, 1993, I will be seventy years old. The time has gone so fast!! Life has been fun, and exciting. I feel so privileged to have lived at the right place and the right time. I have tried real hard to pay attention to each happenstance, to hang on to it, it only happens once. I have succeeded fairly well in most instances, but still......quite a few things I would like to bring back. Its hard to get old and let go............

October 24, 1993 I started my autobiography today under a new sub-directory called Herman's Autobiography. It is called up by typing Autobio at the C prompt. I can't help but remember how we children always relied on our mother to remember dates or whenever what happened!! She always compared what happened or when it happened to something else relating to what was easily remembered, at least for her. She could figure out anything we wanted to know. I wish she was here now to help me remember all these things I want to remember while I write my autobiography. I'll bet she even knew that I was one year three months and seventeen days old when Alice was born. That means that Alice is 475 days younger than I. Norma was born when Alice was four years, one month, and twenty seven days old. Therefore Alice was 1,488 days old, and I was 1,963 days old when Norma was born. I was five years, five months, thirteen days older than Norma. Elizabeth Ann came along eight yyears, nine months, and twenty five days after Norma. I was thirteen years, three months, eight days of age, and Alice was twelve years, nine months, and twenty one days of age when Elizabeth Ann Tripp was born. She became our "little sister" our "pride and joy, " forever. Herman William Tripp--Remembering......

    Notes:

John William Tripp is my Grandfather.

John William Tripp is the son of David Tripp, son of David R. Tripp, son of John Tripp, son of Job Tripp, son of Isaac Tripp, son of Job Tripp, son of Peleg Tripp, son of John Tripp the Founder. John William Tripp, like his father, also barely made it. His father David Tripp died when he was only six months old. He never got to know his father, but stories handed down by his children indicate that he did know his mother, even though she left him to be raised by his Great Aunt Mahala Snelson Reynolds. Grandpa was not too happy with that arrangement, but we need to give his mother Mary Evaline Williamson Tripp the benefit of the doubt. She was married to David when she was seventeen and was a widow at Twenty-one years of ag with three children, all under 5 years of age!

Even though John William Tripp did not talk about his background, it is obvious that he knew about his father and family. His third son George's middle name is David after his father, and his second son Ernest's middle name is Ralph after his uncle Ralph that died tragically in the fatal month of May 1855, when the whole Tripp family was decimated. Part of the reason for his non discussion of his past, was his intense devotion to his own family, 5 boys and one girl!! Of special interest to me, is the fact that he named his first-born son, Joseph after Joseph P. Reynolds, his foster father. Grandpa tells the story about getting a riding horse for his 16th birthday, when he was expecting a team and wagon, but I think that Mr. Reynolds did a pretty good job raising my Grandfather, John William Tripp! John William Tripp grew up near Rose Hill, Mahaska County, Iowa, where he had many close friends as his autograph book clearly shows. His foster mother had given him the book as a present and he promptly made good use of it by getting numerous messages from his friends and classmates. One of the messages was written by his future wife Alice Myrttle Sanford! They evidently were long time friends and got serious enough to get married, after they both worked for the Hibbs family. They were married in Polk County and had all of their children near Mitchellville Iowa. Grandpa was an Elder at the local Church of Christ, where my Dad and other members of the family belonged. In 1915 the family moved to Boone County, Iowa. I am sure that the girls were all glad to see five boys move into the community, because they were all eligible a and they all did marry in that community. Dad (Joseph Raymond Tripp) married my Mom Florence Marjorie Shedd who grew up in the neighborhood. Uncle Ernie (Ernest Ralph Tripp) married Mable Ball (my Aunt Mable Ernie) one week after Dad and Mom got married; they "stood up for each other" and settled down within a couple of miles of each other, near Napier, Boone County, Iowa. Uncle George (George David Tripp) married Mabel Kitchen (my Aunt Mabel George) and promptly moved on a farm half way between his two older brothers! Uncle Gerald (Gerald Sanford Tripp) married Velda Stuart (my Aunt Velda) moved on a farm a little farther away from the other three. Uncle Harris (Harris J Tripp) married Zelma Slaughter (my Aunt Zelma) and moved to the Truro area, which is south of Des Moines. Uncle Harris welded many years for Solar Aircraft in Des Moines. Aunt Mary (Mary Alice Tripp) married Millerd Lee (my uncle Millerd) fifty yeas ago, February 27 1988. They have always farmed in Story County, and are retired in Boone, Boone County, Iowa. All the Tripps have been a close knit family which pleased Grandpa very much. In 1932 John William Tripp (I was named after him) was making hay at his place north of the Lincoln Highway in Story County. He was on the hayrack holding onto the trip rope that he used to "trip" the hay loose, once the fork full of hay entered the big hay barn door. When the hay entered the barn, he pulled on the rope as he had done many, many times before. This time--the rope broke! Grandpa fell backwards, hit the ground--broke his neck! He said "Don't touch me." A few days later, in his own home, in a hospital bed, he visited with me as if nothing had happened. When he tried to drink water from a straw he said "Herman, I hope that you never, ever need to go through something like this!" So far I never have! I am 68, My Grandpa Tripp was 59. He died the next day. I was 9 years old! Herman WILLIAM Tripp--Remembering----

John Woodford Snelson died from a fall from a load of hay in 1946. John William Tripp died from a fall from a load of hay in 1932. They were first cousins!! Herman William Tripp--Remembering----

    Notes:

Alice Myrtle Sanford is my Grandmother. I remember her as a perfect Grandmother, living with us for short periods when she got older. She was always ready to listen to my sisters and I, about any problems we might have at the time, such as "WhWhy do we have to wash our feet every night before we go to bed?". She would give us the same reason that Mom and Dad gave us, but at least we had a second opinion. She kept tract of everyone in the family. Quite a chore when you remember that she had five sons, six daughter-inlaws and quite a few grandchildren and toward the end of her life, great grandchildren. She seemed to love them all equally, and had time for everyone. Grandma was devastated when Grandpa died from the fall from the hayrack, when he was making hay. She carried on however, hoovering over all of her descendants like the great Grandmother that she was. She was a widow for 21 years 5 months and 1 day. When she died, she was 77 years 1 month and 18 days of age. Our family loved her every minute of it, and we will remember her forever!! Herman William Tripp--Remembering----

    Notes:

Herman Graves Shedd is my Grandfather. I was named after him. I was his first grandson. He hoovered over me like a mother hen over her chickens, and taught me much, particularly in carpentry. One look at his pictures, and you immediately get the feeling that he was a cocky, self reliant person, and no one was going to tell him much of anything. If you felt that way about his pictures, you knew him pretty well, because that was my Grandpa!! He was five foot 2 inches of determinination, as long as I knew him and I suspect since birth. His favorite saying to me after making or accomplishing something was, "Just look who did it"! I appreciated his self reliance, and I strongly suspect that I inherited some of it!! His determination must have come from his father who journed from New Hampshire to Oregon with oxen. Some determination!! Grandpa died at age 84 years, 4 months, and 15 days, every day of which everyone around him was aware of!! Herman William Tripp--Remembering----

I discovered in 1992 that he was probably named after his uncle, Hermon Shedd, who died in the Civil War, and is buried in the Whitehouse Landing Cemetery. Hermon William Tripp--Remembering----

    Notes:

Happy birthday Grandma Kate Cottingham Shedd. You are 132 years old today! I never got to meet you, but I got to be born on your birthday! I heard a lot about you, and you must have been a spunky girl, to be married to my Grandpa Shedd. I think I inherited a lot of characteristics from you. Most important, you were the mother of, and named my mother, Florence Marjorie Shedd. You were 29 years, 1 month, and 28 days old the day she was born. My mother was 24 years, 10 months, annd 2 days old, the day I was born. She was happy to see me, but unhappy that you were not here, when she gave birth to her first born son, and your first born grandson. You had died 1 year, 2 months and 22 days before I showed up. I thank you for sharing your birthday with me! July 28, 1991. Herman William Tripp--Remembering----

Seventy years ago today you died! What a sad day for your family. My mother has always missed you very much. She thought of you a lot. I know she thought of you the day I was born. It would have been your 54th birthday. I think my mother cried for me and for you! You passed away seventy years ago today, but we rememeber! April 16, 1992. Herman William Tripp--Remembering----

This picture was taken in 1893. Starting on the left is my Great Grandfather William Willard Shedd, who was born on July 14 1835, and died January 30, 1911. (This is our son Clifford Allen Tripp's birth date, thirty seven years later). He is holding his first born grandchild my aunt Mary Rhoda Shedd Hansen who was born December 15, 1892 and died in 1975. To their left is Great Grandmother Rhoda M. Graves Shedd who was born January 13, 1834 and died Februaty 20, 1905. To her left is Aunnt Dora Shedd Bennett, who was born August 8, 1872 and died May 9, 1943. To her left is her brother and my Grandfather Herman Graves Shedd who was born October 19, 1868 and died March 6, 1953. Standing with him is his wife and my Grandmother Katate Cottingham Shedd born July 28, 1869 (exactly 54 years to the day before I was born) and died April 16,1922 (exactly one year three months and twelve days before I was born). Standing down below is Uncle John William Shedd (Uncle Will) who waas born September 14, 1870 and died May 21, 1940. This picture was taken in Fairbury Illinois, I assume, at Great Grandfather William Willard Shedd's house. My mother Florence Marjorie was born near this town at Weston, Illinois of parents Herman Graves Shedd and Kate Cottingham Shedd September 26, 1898. Another coincidence is the fact that Aunt Mary's birthdate is exactly 21 years after my Grandfather John William Tripp's birthdate. Herman William Tripp--Remembering----
