    (1). Orange County, North Carolina, marriage bond; bondsmen were N. Gattis and William King (Brent H. Holcomb, Marriages of Orange County, North Carolina, 1779-1868; Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc.; Baltimore, 1983). Listed in the 1830 US Census of Lincoln Co Tennessee: Charles owned property on Mulberry Creek in Lincoln County Tennessee in 1833 (Lincoln County "Tennessee Deed Book K. 1836-1837, page 415 records a deed from James Gattis to Nathaniel Gattis for 29 acres of land on Mulberry Creek joining Charles Gattis; deed dated July 20, 1833; Charles Gattis was a witness). The family at the time of the 1840 US Census of Lincoln County Tennessee consisted of one male 5-10 Years of age, one male 10-15 years, one male 30-40-years of age, one female under 5 years and one female 30-40 years of age. Distributive shares in Charles Gattis' estate went to his widow, William H. Gattis, G. W. Gattis, J. W. Mitchel, and S. M. Mitchel (linccoln County Tennessee Estate Settlement Records, 1862-1874, page 169). Annis living with son, George, and family in Lincoln County Tennessee at the time of the 1870 and 1880 US Census. (2). Family living in Lincoln County, Tennessee, at the time of the 1870 and 1880 US Census. (3). Family living in Lincoln County, Tennessee, at the time of the 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 US Census. The 1900 Census indicates that Mary was born 18 Dec 1834 and was the mother of seven children, four living at the time. (4). Obiturary for "Mrs Mary C. Gattis" published 12 January 1950 in the Moore County News (Lynchburg Tennessee) identified her as a daughter of "Wesley and Julia Ridge Gattis" and wife of J. S. Sweeney, who surviveed. Other Survivors identified as two daughters, Mrs. R. W. Young and Mrs. Dillion Tucker; two sons Vernon Sweeney and Lawrence Sweeney; one sister, Mrs. Ben Duke; and one brother , Charlie Gattis. (5). Joye M. King of San Diego California in 1991 provided information on descendants of Susan Elizabeth Gattis and James William Mitchell. Some of the details were based on records compiled by Mrs. J. Clark Anderson Junior.
