    References: Valentine, Klein, Buck Smiton . His descendants remained in Union Vale, at Clinton, where Smiton lived. He was noticed by biographers of the Valley.

    He was mentioned in his father's will of June 12, 1802. Richard Vincent's will dated May 26, 1788, and proven March 16, 1789 (Dutchess County Wills A:136 or VI:34), mentioned his daughter and son-in-law and named the latter ( Smiton) as executor.

    The will of Michael Vincent of Dutchess County dated June 15, 1801, and proved October 15, 1808 (ibid C:231) also mentioned Smiton and Hannah Tripp. Dutchess County Tax Lists show him in Town of Beekman 1770-1778. The 1790 census for Beekman lists five males. Smiton refused to sign the General Association in Beekman's Precinct.

    He was active in the local government as pathmaster/ overseer of the highway (Frank J. Doherty, "Settlers of the Beekman Patent, Dutchess County, New York' [1990 415, 200) C. Cowan, Dutchess County Willls VI:26. Smiten and Hannah Tripp, 1780, witness for Cook Howland ( 19 April ). ( Anna M.
