Tillinghast, (1729-1776), was appointed by the General Assembly, recruiting
officer, 1775. He was taken prisoner by the Tories, carried to Block Island,
where he died from wounds and exposure. He was born in Providence, R. I. His
son, John, was killed by the Tories.
