Genealogical Record
of
AUGUSTUS TRIPP
of
Lanesboro (Berkshire) MA
by George A. Tripp, 1914
I have no authentic record of the parents of Augustus Tripp of Lanesboro MA,
only an indefinite family tradition that his father's name was also Augustus;
that he was born or lived somewhere in the Eastern part of New York State; that
he married Betsey Smith; that at one time he lived either in Stephentown
(Renssalear) NY or Hancock (Berkshire) MA, both places near Lanesboro. He
died, leaving his widow and one son two years old, who was the AUGUSTUS TRIPP
from whom I have the following complete record.
This Augustus Tripp was born in Lanesboro, and I therefore call him Augustus
Tripp of Lanesboro. I cannot as yet connect him with Isaac Tripp of
Warwick, RI, who was prominent in the settlement of the Wyoming Valley in
Pennsylvania; was prominent there and was killed there by Indians Dec. 16,
1778, shortly after the Wyoming Massacre of July 3, 1778. Some of the
children of Peter Wheeler, who was killed at the Wyoming Massacre, with their
mother escaped from the massacre and fled to Lanesboro, where they had
friends. Some of these children of Peter Wheeler were life-long friends
of Augustus Tripp of Lanesboro, and afterward went with him and others to
settle in New Haven VT.
Thus, there is evidence of some bonds of friendship, if not relationship,
between Lanesboro and Wyoming Valley, and I think that Augustus Tripp was in
some way related to the aforesaid Isaac Tripp. Augustus Tripp's grandson
was named Isaac, possibly after Isaac of Wyoming. It is known that Isaac
Tripp of Wyoming had children, but no authentic record of them is preserved so
far as I know.
Augustus Tripp of Lanesboro was fifteen years old at the time of the Wyoming
massacre. He might have been a son or a nephew of Isaac Tripp.
Preserved Wheeler of Lanesboro, whose father was killed by Indians in the
Wyoming Massacre, was carried by his mother to Lanesboro.
The Wheeler records state that Preserved Wheeler was born in Lanesboro, so his
father probably went from there to join the colony in the Wyoming Valley.
He and Augustus Tripp were lifelong friends. He and the son of
Augustus (Ansel) married sisters. Wheeler marrying Mary Johnson-McNeil, a
widow, and Ansel Tripp marrying her younger sister Emma Johnson-Waterous, also
a widow. The second son of Ansel Tripp was named Isaac McNeil Tripp, thus
showing that possibly this name Isaac came down from the Isaac of Warwick RI
and Wyoming PA.
For convenience I shall call Augustus Tripp of Lanesboro, Augustus Tripp
(first), numbering succeeding generations (two), (three), etc.
AUGUSTUS TRIPP (FIRST) Born in Lanesboro MA 19, 1763.
Married Polly Walker, daughter of Gideon and Mary Walker, in Lanesboro, MA Nov.
26, 1789. She was born in that town Aug. 24, 1768. When she was
about six years old, her father was captured by Indians, carried off, and was
never heard from. She was adopted into the family of Col. Smith of
Lanesboro. (Possibly the Jonathan Smith of Lanesboro mentioned in John
Fiske's "Critical Period of American History, pp 324- 26.)
She died in New Haven VT Aug. 24, 1820. He died in New Haven VT Sept. 14, 1844.
Augustus Tripp (First), when only fifteen years of age, enlisted in the
Revolutionary Army and served for a few months in the defense of Boston.
He was in Capt. Samuel Fairfield's Company of Col. Nathan Sparhawk's
regiment. The company served a short time at Dorchester and was discharged
Dec. 12, 1778. About 1789 he took title to land in what is now New Haven
(Addison) VT making a clearing in the forest for his home and farm. After
his marriage he and his wife, with a number of families, moved from Lanesboro
to New Haven VT, these families having likewise taken land there. His
first house built when he first settled there was of logs, but about 1792 he
built the permanent Tripp homestead, a comfortable typical New England
home. It is now (1914) still standing but is out of the possession of the
Tripp family; very old and out of repair. Close by the homestead built by
him is a magnificent elm tree, which he planted about 1792. It is said to
be the largest elm in that part of the state and is a very beautiful
tree. He was a man of strong character, large physique, and a leader in
the community.
He and his wife are buried in the Village Cemetery of New Haven VT. On his
monument are inscribed the words "A Revolutionary Soldier."

world, in April 1844 he left the home to seek his fortune in what was then
called the West, first going to Cleveland OH. He afterwards went to

many years. After an active business career of forty years as an employee
