Descendants
of Nicholas TRIPP - 15 Jun 1998
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FIRST
GENERATION
1. Nicholas TRIPP was born before 1722. He died in 1791 in SC. Nicholas Tripp first shows up in Orange Co.,
NC about 1753. There have been many
attempts to determine the parentage and lineage of Nicholas. Within this site
is some of the history of this area, some of the possible ancestral family
options, and finally what we currently know about Nicholas Tripp of Orange Co.,
NC.
History
of Orange Co., NC
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/orange/tax/oran_tax.txt
Orange
Co., North Carolina was created in 1752 from the larger Bladen, Granville and
Johnston counties. Later in 1777 Caswell Co. was created from the
"Northern Division" of Orange Co. Later in 1791, Pearson Co. was
created from the "Eastern" half of Caswell Co. and in 1840 Alamance
Co. was created from the "Western" half of Orange Co. Also part of
Durham Co. was created in 1881 from the "Eastern" portion of Orange
Co.
Tripp
Men in the South
The
following male Tripps were in the south prior to Nicholas buying land after
1753. It may be clear that some of
these lines are not ancestors of Nicholas Tripp, but I believe that it may be
helpful to know which Tripp lines were in the south at the time of Nicholas's
arrival to help prevent any unnecessary confusion.

Migration:
Rhode
Island to North Carolina
There
is this DAR listing:
Robert
Tripp, b 1722, d 1800 m Grace Caw PS NC
I
believe that this Robert (Robert, James, John) came from the RI Tripp family
and his wife's maiden name is actually Daw.
Robert and some of his descendants appear to have been with him in
NC. See descendants of John Tripp of RI
for more info on Robert's line. It is
not currently thought that Nicholas is a descendant of Robert Tripp.
Maryland
to North Carolina:
The
first record we have of the Trippe family in Maryland is in 1663 of a
Lieutenant Colonel Henry Trippe. Some of Henry's descendants migrated to NC.
Henry was born in Canterbury, England in1632 and died in Dorchester County,
Maryland in March of 1698. Henry had fought in Flanders under the Prince of
Orange, who was afterwards King William III, of England. He brought with him to
the Province three of his troopers and took up land in Dorchester County, MD.
Henry came with four of his sons, John, William, Henry Jr. and Edward. When
Henry Trippe came to Maryland he owned a piece of land and called it "The
Tripelow Forrest".
Henry
was Representative in Maryland Assembly in 1671-75, 1681-82, 1692-93; and was
one of the Committee of Twenty for regulating affairs in Maryland in 1690; a
Justice and County Commissioner in 1669-81, 1685-94; a Captain of foot in 1676; a Major of Horse in 1689.
Henry's brother, Thomas Trippe, was mentioned by James, Duke of York,
afterwards
King James II., in his autobiography (Naim Papers) as aiding him to escape from
St. James Palace after the beheading of Charles I. Henry Trippe married Frances
Brooke, widow of Michael Brooke of St. Leonard's Creek, Calvert County,
Maryland and married second an Elizabeth, who survived him.
Henry
Trippe's, son John Trippe, ended up in North Carolina as early as 1712.
This caused some early confusion in
North Carolina since John Trippe went by the name of Trip and Tripp instead of
Trippe. He had four sons, Henry, John, William and Neville. These four boys
start out as Tripp, but over time changed the spelling of each of their names
to Trippe. This change coincided exactly with the arrival of Robert Tripp from
Rhode Island. It is thought that John Trippe wanted to be certain that everyone
knew that there were two different Tripp families.
Some of
the early records of MD Trippe men are found in three wills:
http://www.access.digex.net/~spectre/lecompte/
1.
Anthony1 LECOMPTE was born circa 1618 near Callis, Parish of Mackeneere Callis,
Province of Picardy. He married Hester Dottante on 11 Jun 1661 at St. Helen's
Church, Bishopgate, London, Middlesex, England. He died in 1673. His estate was
probated on 25 Oct 1673. He left a will on 9 Sep 1673 at Dorchester County,
Maryland; "To eld. son John, all land on other side of the Ck.; also 50
acres bought of William Willoughby / To 3 sons, viz: Moses, Philip, and
Anthony, residue of land equally / To daus. Hester and Katherine and NICHOLAS
TRIPP, personalty / Execx: Wife Hester / Test: Jacob Seth, John Snookes,
Margaret Bryant" as recorded in the Maryland Calendar of Wills, Cotton
and
Wright.
7.
John3 LECOMPTE Jr. (John2, Anthony1) was born circa 1686 at Dorchester County,
Maryland. He married Blanche Powell, daughter of Charles Powell and Clare Gary,
circa 1709 at Maryland. He died in 1754. His estate was probated on 15 Mar
1754. He left a will on 17 Jan 1754 at Dorchester County, Maryland; Wit: Edward
Noel, John Phips, Mary Nukerwell, JOHN TRIPPE; Phips and Nukerwell say they saw Lecompte sign his
will" as recorded in Maryland Calendar of Wills, Cotton and Wright.
4.
Anthony2 LECOMPTE Jr. (Anthony1) was born in 1665 at Maryland. He married
Margaret Beckwith at Maryland. He died circa 1705. His estate was probated on 6
Jun 1705. Margaret BECKWITH married second John Brannock Sr., son of Edmond
Brannock and Jane Roche, after 1705. She left a will on 13 Oct 1751 that read:
(Wills 28, 324)... Exs. Joseph Pain and Ann, his wife / Wit: JOHN TRIPPE,
Samuel Hubert, Mary Hinkson" as recorded in the Maryland Calendar of
Wills, Cotton and Wright. She died in Oct 1751. Her estate was probated on 23
Oct 1751.
From
unknown to GA:
The DAR
also has this later listing:
John
Tripp, b 1756, d 1796, m Sally Unknown PS GA
I have
not been able to place this John into any Tripp lineages that I currently
have. This John may be connected to the
John Trippe who was born about 1740 and died Dec 1794. This John Trippe also
married a Salley Unknown. Their daughter, Lily Ann Trippe, born about 1768 in
NC, married an Allen Pope of NC. Allen
and Lily soon moved to GA as their first child was born in GA. Because of the
spelling of Trippe, this John may also be from the MD Trippe line.
Rhode
Island to North Carolina:
Herman
has Nicholas Tripp attached as a son to Peleg and Mary (Gardner) Tripp with an
explanation as to his theory. See Herman's site for more information.
